Earthquake & disaster preparedness

The emergency preparedness program for Loma Linda University directs how we protect ourselves and how we maintain our ability to function during and after a disaster. Being familiar with this plan and making preparation are the most important things you can do. Knowing what to do NOW, before anything happens, will help you be a survivor.

WHAT TO DO
- Before -

  • Know the location of the Fire and Disaster Manual (Red Manual) and the Emergency and Safety Procedures Manual (Blue Manual). They contain important reference information.
  • Learn locations of critical equipment.
  • Review and practice your area-specific emergency procedures.
  • Review and practice your area-specific evacuation procedures.
  • Secure items which could cause injury or obstruction during a disaster event.
  • Know evacuation routes and exits locations.
  • Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries in your work area.
  • Keep durable walking shoes available.
  • Establish a mutually understood plan with your family or friends.
WHAT TO DO
- During and immediately after -
  • Protect yourself and those with you.
  • Take cover under or near furniture or walls if possible.
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, breakable items.
  • Remain calm, be reassuring to those around you.
  • Assist any injured persons with first aid.
  • Refer to the Fire and Disaster Manual and the Emergency and Safety Procedures Manual for emergency phone numbers and contact persons.
  • Conduct a damage assessment of your area, look for fire, structural damage, electrical hazards, water damage, broken glass, hazardous chemical spills, blocked exit routes.
    • Report damage or hazards immediately to the Security Control Center, 44320.
    • Report damage to the department of engineering services, University - 44558 and Medical Center 44318.
    • Correct problems, if they can be handled safely.
    • Evacuate the area if necessary, have someone check the evacuation route and destination, if possible, prior to leaving.
    • Do not speak with news or other media representatives. Give information only to the person responsible for the area or building you are in.
