Classes for 2010

Preparing for a new baby is a special time! Loma Linda University Children's Hospital would like to make this a positive experience by providing a wide range of classes to inform you and support you as you prepare to give birth and transition into a family. Certified Educators teach the classes. Register early because class size is limited.

Preparing for Childbirth

Childbirth will be one of the most memorable events of your life. Whether it is your first baby, or you have had a baby before, preparing for childbrith will help make your birth experience more satisfying. This class will give you and your partner the information you will need to better communicate with your care giving team during your labor and birth, to make the decisions that are best for you. You will learn comfort techniques and practice breathing and relaxation exercises that will help faciliate your labor and birth as well as decrease pain and fatigue. Couples should take the course during the last trimester of pregnancy.

Breatfeeding Basics is included in the price of Childbirth Class. When registering for Childbirth Class, ask to be enrolled in your preferred Brestfeeding Basics Class.

Four-Week Series

The four week series is an in-depth class which offers extra time spent on topics and reinforces relaxation, breathing, and birthing skills with repeated weekly practice.

Sunday One Day Class

The one day class is a fast paced, streamlined class for couples who are  unable to attend a longer, weeknight series or for those who have had a baby before and want to update their information and birthing skills.

Time: 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Lunch break from 12:00 noon - 1:30 p.m.)

Cost: $85.00 per couple

Health and Fitness in Pregnancy

Women who exercise during pregnancy have improved circulation, deeper sleep, shorter labors, lower c-section rates, and faster return to pre-pregnancy weight. This class is a great place to meet other pregnant moms, share the joys and challenges of pregnancy, and learn issues related to health, birth, and postpartum. We teach a combination of low impact aqua-exercise, toning, and stretches for all stages of pregnancy. Classes are on-going and the first class is free.

Day/Time: Mondays and Wednesdays / 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Location: A-Level Physical Therapy Gym Pool

Cost: $55.00 for five weeks

Breastfeeding Basics

We want to help you succeed at breastfeeding. Learn practical tips including demonstrations of positioning and latch, babies hunger cues and how to know your baby's getting enough, benefits of breastfeeding to both mom and baby, feeding patterns, growth spurts, sleep states, role of fathers, nutrition for mom, and what breastfeeding resources are available. Bring your questions and issues to discuss. This class is taught by Lactation Educators.

Day/Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays / 6:30 - 9:00 p.m.

Cost: $30.00 per couple Free if enrolled in Childbirth Class

Baby Is Coming  / Happiest Baby on the Block Class

This class will help you gain confidence in taking care of your new baby. Topics cover normal newborn appearance and behavior, sleep patterns, bathing, diapering, and safety. You will have lots of hands on practice and fun. You will also learn and practice Dr. Karp's Happiest Baby on the Block 5 S's calming and swaddling techniques and go home with a FREE CD and DVD valued at $40.00.

Sibling Preparation Class

This class will help prepare older brothers and sisters for the new baby. Taught by a Child Life Specialist, it includes dress up, fun activities, and a tour of the birth unit. Parents should attend the class with children. This class is appropriate for children three through seven years of age.

Date/Time: Wednesdays / 6:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Cost: $25.00 per family

Infant/Child CPR Class

This is a hands-on class designed to teach caregiviers the life-saving technique of cardiopulmonary resuscitation appropriate to be used on newborn through eight years of age. Practice on mannequins is performed.* You will also learn about care of choking babies, SIDS, safety, and childproofing. A car seat demonstration completes this class to make your baby as safe as possible. Register early - class size is restricted to eight couples. *This class is a family friendly practice class and does not CPR certify you. If you would like a certification in CPR, please call our Life Support Education Department at (909) 558-4977.

The Art of Infant Massage

This is a four week class designed for parents, grandparents, caregivers, or older siblings to learn how to massage their infant. Expectant parents are encouraged to learn the techniques before their baby arrives. Massage helps stimulate healthy bonding, reduces colic, and increases self-confidence in both the infant and the caregivier. For more information or to sign up for the class, call 877-558-6248. Maternity Tour

Wednesdays at 7:00 p.m. a tour and informative question and answer session is offered for expectant parent(s). It is approximately one and a half hours long. You do not need to register for the tour.

Meet by the Information Desk at Main Entrance to the hospital.

Due to the recent spread of H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) within California, and for the continued health and safety of our patients, visitors, and staff, children under the age of 18 will not be allowed to go on the maternity tour. Thank you for your cooperation during this limited time.

No tour November 24, December 22, or December 29.

Spanish Maternity Tour

The last Wednesday of each month, the maternity tour will be in Spanish only. Same time and location as above tour.

Baby is Home

Bringing home a brand new baby for the first time can be an exciting, confusing, and sometimes frightening time. This class is designed for new parents to gain more understanding about caring for the postpartum mother and baby; learn more about your new role as mom and dad; and gain confidence in calming a colicky baby using the five S's created by Dr. Harvey Karp, author of The Happiest Baby on the Block. This class is taught by a Certified Educator for the Happiest Baby. For more information or to sign up for the class, call (877) 558-6248.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Join a free support group for moms and babies led by a Certified Lactation Educator. Get support from other moms; learn more about breastfeeding; talk openly about your breastfeeding experiences; receive assistance with breastfeeding problems; have your questions answered; and gain confidence. Moms Joining Moms

A four week, free of charge group for new moms and their babies (older siblings are welcome, too). A place for you to get support from other moms and start new friendships; talk about your delivery and growing baby; learn about infant massage, infant sign language, babywearing, and calming techniques for fussy babies; check out books and videos for both mom and baby; and learn about resources in our community. Baby Bonding Yoga

This class is a gentle way to help your body recover from childbirth while bonding and having fun with your baby. It is also an opportunity to connect with other parents and share the experience and insights of raising a child. Special attention is placed on rebuilding the core strength of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor, as well as relieving tension in the neck and shoulders caused by lifting, carrying, or nursing. It's Time To Eat

This class is designed for new parents who are preparing to feed their baby at 6 - 12 months of age. Learn how, when, and what to feed your baby; learn healthy, fun, safe, and creative ways to feed your baby; safely, quickly, and easily prepare and store your baby's food; learn sign language words relating to eating; and calm your fears and make feeding your baby more enjoyable.
